Chapter 6
Ancient Greece
Our social studies class continues its study of the ancient world with a stop into ancient Greece – home of the Parthenon, mythology, and the Olympics. The next time you and your child are watching or reading about sports, lead a discussion about the Olympics. Have you ever noticed that during the opening ceremonies of the Olympics, the team from Greece enters the arena first? This is to honor the fact that the Olympic Games began in Greece.
The study of ancient Greece includes more than the Olympics, however. Your child will learn about the religion, philosophy, and literature of the ancient Greeks, as well as about their daily lives. Ask your child to tell you about one of these subjects. Ask what he or she thinks would have found most enjoyable about living in ancient Greece.
Drama was also important to the lives of the ancient Greeks. If your child is interested in theater, he or she may enjoy reading about ancient plays and the theaters in which they were held.
Your support throughout the study of this book is helping your child learn more about this fascinating and formative time in history. Thank you for being part of our class’s exploration of the ancient world.
Sincerely,
Mr. Lewis
